Facies distribution on a carbonate ramp controlled by underground relief and subsidence (Late Eocene of the eastern Alpine Foreland Basin)

6. Maerl Facies

The main facies type of the study area is represented by coralline algal rudstones, composed of both fragmented and unfragmented algal branches and rhodoliths (= unattached nodules composed of calcareous red algae), partially with various amounts of siliciclastic grains.

In the present-day Northern Atlantic and the Mediterranean this sediment is called 'Maerl'; it is known from the shallowest subtidal down to the lower limit of the photic zone. In the shallow water they can form submarine dunes, partially cut by sand channels.
