6. Maerl Facies
The main facies type of the study area is represented by coralline algal
rudstones, composed of both fragmented and unfragmented algal branches and
rhodoliths (= unattached nodules composed of calcareous red algae), partially
with various amounts of siliciclastic grains.
In the present-day Northern Atlantic and the Mediterranean this sediment is
called 'Maerl'; it is known from the shallowest subtidal down to the lower
limit of the photic zone. In the shallow water they can form submarine dunes,
partially cut by sand channels.
