Facies distribution on a carbonate ramp controlled by underground relief and subsidence (Late Eocene of the eastern Alpine Foreland Basin)

4. Subsidence

The Late Eocene transgression, which led to depositon of the first marine sediments in this area, was caused by subduction of the European Plate under the Adriatic Plate during the Alpine orogeny. In terms of subsidence patterns in Foreland Basins, the Late Eocene Alpine Foreland Basin represents the initial stage of asymmetrical flexural loading; this caused the formation of a carbonate ramp. The continuous sedimentation of shallow water sediments suggests a continuous subsidence during the Late Eocene.
